Sugaring aftercare: a routine that actually prevents ingrowns
Sugaring already produces fewer ingrown hairs than waxing — but the aftercare routine in the days and weeks between appointments is what separates smooth, even skin from stubborn bumps. Here's the exact routine we recommend at Bare Elegance in Welland.
The first 24 hours: leave the skin alone
Sugaring opens the follicles briefly, and anything you put on the area — heat, sweat, fragrance, friction — can trigger irritation or a small breakout that looks like ingrowns but isn't. For the first day, cool showers only, loose clothing, no gym, no pool, no deodorant on freshly-sugared underarms, and no sun.
Days 2–3: start exfoliating
This is the step most people skip — and it's why ingrowns keep coming back. Starting on day two, exfoliate the area gently 2–3 times per week. Two options work well:
- Physical: a soft exfoliating mitt in the shower with a gentle body wash. Light circular pressure, not scrubbing.
- Chemical: a leave-on body exfoliant with 2% salicylic acid (best for bikini and body) or 5–10% glycolic acid. Apply after showering, once daily to start.
Chemical exfoliants outperform scrubs for ingrown prevention because they clear the dead skin cells inside the follicle, not just the surface.
Hydrate every day
Dry skin traps regrowing hairs under the surface. Apply an unscented moisturizer daily — anything with ceramides, squalane, or hyaluronic acid works. Skip anything heavily fragranced or anything with mineral oil on the bikini area; both can clog follicles.
Timing: rebook every 4–5 weeks
Consistency matters more than any product. When you sugar on a regular 4–5 week cycle, more of your hair is caught in the same growth phase each visit — and after 3–4 appointments regrowth is noticeably finer, patchier and easier to remove. Waiting 8+ weeks resets the cycle and brings back the coarse regrowth you were trying to escape.
Weekly aftercare checklist
- Day 1: cool showers, loose clothing, no gym/pool/sun.
- Day 2 onward: exfoliate 2–3× per week (mitt or salicylic acid).
- Daily: unscented moisturizer after showering.
- Week 3: if you see any surface bumps, warm compress + salicylic acid twice a day.
- Week 4–5: rebook your next appointment.
What to avoid between appointments
- Shaving — it undoes the growth cycle we're training.
- Picking at or squeezing bumps.
- Heavy fragranced lotions or body oils on the bikini area.
- Retinoids on the treated area for 5–7 days pre and post.
- Tanning beds — they irritate freshly-sugared skin for weeks.
